Setting forUp RDS with MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication)

Part 1: Set Up Microsoft Authenticator

Security Information

The following instructions are for connecting your Microsoft 365 account to the Microsoft Authenticator app to securely connect to Pine-Richland’s RDS server.  

Using a smartphone, you will need to download and install the app from the app store on your device. Search for Microsoft Authenticator. The icon pictured above is the correct app.

Adding the Authenticator to your Account - Smartphone

  1. On your school issued Chromebook or other devicecomputer:

    (not
      the phone you will be registering) in
    1. In a web browser navigate to https://mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info
    2. You will need to sign in with your email formatted like [username]@pinerichland.org
      • Example: 12Jstudent34@pinerichland.org
    3. Under “Security info” click
        • Click on + Add sign-in method
        • In the “Add a method” window
        • choose
        • ChooseAuthenticatorMicrosoft app”Authenticator” in the dropdown and click Add
        • If you haven’t downloaded the app, youYou will now be prompted to dodownload so,the thenapp. NextDo not close the app until you complete the setup.
    4. Click NEXT (twice)
      • A QR code will appear on the screen- (do not scan it yet) leave this window open. AFTER you complete part 2 below, you will be prompted to scan the QR code from the Authenticator app.

    Part 2: Download App on Your Phone

    1. On your phone,smartphone, download the Microsoft Authenticator app

    2. Open the app and allow notifications if prompted, allow notifications. prompted.
    3. Add an account,account and
        select
      • Select "Work or school".School"
    4. Use the Authenticator app to scan the QR code andfrom followPart the prompts

    Microsoft Account Issues

    If it doesn't accept your @prrams.org email try changing the domain on your email to @pinerichland.org.
    Example: 12FLastname34@pinerichland.org.

    Switching to a New Smartphone

    1. On your school issued Chromebook or other device (not the phone you will be registering) in a web browser navigate to https://mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info
    2. Under “Security info”, click Delete beside "Microsoft Authenticator"
    3. In the “Add a method” window choose “Authenticator app” in the dropdown and click Add
    4. If you haven’t downloaded the app, you will now be prompted to do so, then Next
    5. On your phone, if prompted, allow notifications. 
    6. Add an account, and select "Work or school".
    7. Use the Authenticator app to scan the QR code1 and follow the promptsprompts.

    Part

    3: Access RDS From Your Chromebook

    1. Open a browser and Log into https://rds.pinerichland.org
    2. Enter your username (NO @prrams.org)
    3. Enter your password
    4. If you are off-campus your phone will prompt you to authenticate by entering a number in the app.
